Write a 1-2 page personal gender/ sexuality narrative. While I am asking you to write non-fiction, keep in mind that all narratives are constructed. As you write this, think about the cultural narratives (which you have encountered in the media, literature, arts, political movements, etc.) that mould your personal narrative and allow you to articulate your story through a particular language. This narrative does not have to be about queerness or transness, but it does need to focus on some aspect of the way you conceptualize your gendered and sexualized positionality.
The aim of this assignment is to understand better a) your own positionality in this class community, b) the narrative techniques used in articulations of gender and sexuality, c) the importance of memoir, autobiography, and creative non-fiction in queer and trans writing, and d) how personal narratives are produced culturally based on the language and stories available to us. 01/25:
What comes to mind when you think of LGBT Literature? What are the problematic politics of the acronym LGBT? What is queer? What is queer theory? What is queer of color critique and why is it important? How do trans theories complicate normative understandings of gender and sexuality? How do they complicate queer conceptualizations of gender and sexuality? What are the common themes addressed in queer and trans literature? What the aesthetics of this body of literature? How can we queer genre and form? 01/25: |
